about
This one first appeared on John Walker and the New Hokum Boys' 2012 album 𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘰. For as long as John played it, I always heard him introduce this song in essentially the same way — talking about his young granddaughter, Franny Faye, and how one day she came up out of the clear blue sky, apropos of nothing, with no prompting or provocation whatsoever, and said, "I am happy like a dog." I loved watching my family dance and play a game of "red light" during the tune's playful pauses, holding their awkward positions for as long as John cared to torture them before he jumped back in.
lyrics
I don't like bein' fat, but I like gettin' fat
I like walkin' 'round in my Panama hat
Look at me, baby, I'm happy like a dog
I'm crazy for ya, like a sandhills country wild hog
Beans and rice, everything nice
Got the appetite, got the candlelight
Look at me, baby, I'm happy like a dog
I'm crazy for ya, like a sandhills country wild hog
If anybody asks you, what's goin' on
He's crazy like a loon
Go ahead on, speak the truth
Nothin' like them wild hog blues
Bombay gin in the afternoon
Then around midnight, barkin' at the moon
Look at me, baby, I'm happy like a dog
I'm crazy for ya, like a sandhills country wild hog
I like lyin' 'round to think about what I'm gonna do
I like a big snooze in the afternoon
Look at me, baby, I'm happy like a dog
I'm crazy for ya, like a sandhills country wild hog
Feel that wind blowin' cool and blue
A larger number between one and two
Look at me, baby, I'm happy like a dog
I'm crazy for ya, like a sandhills country wild hog
If anybody asks you, what's goin' on
He's crazy like a loon
Go ahead on, speak the truth
Nothin' like them wild hog blues
I don't like bein' fat, but I like gettin' fat
I like walkin' 'round in my Panama hat
Look at me, baby, I'm happy like a dog
I'm crazy for ya like a sandhills country wild hog
I'm crazy for ya like a sandhills country wild hog

Gillian Welch and Townes Van Zandt, Mississippi John Hurt and Etta Baker — but this band is no mere product of its influences. Since their start in 2012, Jack Hotel has proven itself one of the best, and most original, folk acts in the midwest....more
