Hattie Barlow
03:46
|
|||
Hattie Barlow, like the knife blade
Sharpens when she draws across a stone
Blood and thunder tear asunder
Clean the marrow from the bone
Clean the marrow from the bone
She's a master haberdasher
She can sew herself to anybody's side
In the lowlands, in the quicksand
She's the apple of my eye
She's the apple of my eye
She steps into the fire and her body is impervious to flame
A rose is still a rose and Hattie's Hattie if she goes
And calls herself by any other name
Like a jigsaw on a seesaw
When she gets a belly full of bootleg wine
How I miss her sweet elixir
I think about my Hattie all the time
I think about my Hattie all the time
She steps into the fire and her body is impervious to flame
A rose is still a rose and Hattie's Hattie if she goes
And calls herself by any other name
If you don't know Hattie Barlow
You can tell her by the saunter in her stride
But if you see her, don't believe her
She can hide a thousand years behind her eyes
And live a thousand years with that disguise
She steps into the fire and her body is impervious to flame
A rose is still a rose and Hattie's Hattie even if she goes
And calls herself by any other body's name

Paint
04:17
|
|||
I lay beneath an apple tree
Watched the branches and the leaves
The sun was shiverin' in the breeze
Throwin' dapples on the shade
And in the shelter I had made
It was easier to believe
That our love would never fade
And that you would never leave
I'd rather be the shadow shade
Underneath your window sill
Where the sun don't ever spill
And the paint don't ever fade
On the green side of the hill
Well protected from the day
Where the sun don't ever spill
And the paint don't ever fade
On the low side of the road
Or the dark side of the moon
Buried underneath a stone
Hid away from common view
Like a turtle in a shell
Or a wish thrown in a well
Or a secret you don't tell
Because you hope it isn't true
I'd rather be the shadow shade
Underneath your window sill
Where the sun don't ever spill
And the paint don't ever fade
People's hair grows white with age
From white to yellow turns the page
And the meadow turns to brown
When the seasons turn around
I'd rather be the shadow shade
Underneath your window sill
Where the sun don't ever spill
And the paint don't ever fade

Counting Tower Blues
05:28
|
|||
If there's a book then someone has to number every page
From the time you draw a breath, that's when they start to count your age
First they'll count you up in inches, then they'll count you up in feet
They'll teach you how to count, then they'll put you in the street
And the first thing that you'll learn is how to count how much you own
If you can count to ten, well, then you're good as fully grown
You'll learn to count most everything that passes into view
It's just as natural as the air that passes in and out of you
You'll count the happy couples with their fingers interclasped
And the men who line the gutter with all the other gutter trash
And you will wake up in a cold motel, alone and drenched with sweat
You'll count four and twenty blackbirds drawn in moonlit silhouette
Four and twenty blackbirds drawn in moonlit silhouette
Reflected in the broken motel television set
Something's gonna happen, hasn't even happened yet
Four and twenty blackbirds and you're cold, alone, and wet
You'll fumble for the bedside table's partial cigarette
It only cost a nickel, it's as much as you could get
And the four and twenty traincars as they rattle on down the track
All seem to rattle off the reasons you don't have the things you lack
The moon is like the second hand while the seasons pass the hour
Time's a cruel accountant sitting in some counting tower
With money and hate and love and fate and the weight of your misdeeds
And all the times you've tried and simply failed to succeed
They're counting your alliances and counting your mistakes
And if they give you something they'll keep track of what you take
And you will wake up in a cold motel, alone and drenched with sweat
You're divested of your plenty, you're cold, alone, and wet
Four and twenty blackbirds drawn in moonlit silhouette
Reflected in the ancient motel television set
Something's gonna happen, hasn't even happened yet
Four and twenty blackbirds and you're cold, alone, and wet
One goes to the money, two goes to the show
Kid, they'll gladly sell you tickets if you got enough to go

Two-Bar Town
04:02
|
|||
It's a two-bar town, seen better days
No one comin' round off the interstate
They moved the spot for the county fair
The last thing you got is the getting there
There's the getting lost, but no getting found
There's no getting out of a two-bar town
The old ferris wheel makes a silhouette
Eight legs of steel on a red sunset
You can walk the street from end to end
Lots of folks to meet but not a single friend
See the neon shine when the sun goes down
There's no getting out of a two-bar town
In a two-bar town, there's no night or day
There's just sun comes out, sun goes away
There's the getting lost, but no getting found
There's no getting out of a two-bar town
The old motel has a buzzing sign
And you might as well stop and stay the night
While you lie awake, you hear the westbound train
Makes the glass to shake in the window frame
It'll make your teeth to sweat, make your heart to pound
There's no getting out of a two-bar town
In a two-bar town, there's no night or day
There's just sun comes out, sun goes away
There's the getting lost, but no getting found
There's no getting out of a two-bar town
There's no getting out of a two-bar town

Lightning splits the sky in two
One side's me and one side's you
Rain streaks across the glass
It's quiet through the underpass
I love to hear them drivers sing
I love the sound of that big machine
I hear the wind and I hear the rain
I love to watch the storm
From the window of a train
Conductor's coming, making rounds
An hour to the closest town
I know that I am getting old
'cause I feel the rainstorm in my bones
I love to hear them drivers sing
I love the sound of that big machine
I hear the wind and I hear the rain
I love to watch the storm
From the window of a train
Lightning splits the sky in two
One side's me and one side's you
Rain streaks across the glass
It's quiet through the underpass
I'm thinkin' what you said was true
How I always run away from you
I love to hear them drivers sing
I love the sound of that big machine
I hear the wind and I hear the rain
I love to watch the storm
From the window of a train

Barstool Fighter Pilot
03:57
|
|||
When I was just a little baby buggy bumper
Daddy bought a ticket to the airshow
And I wished that I was flippin' like a fighter pilot
Way above the world somewhere
Perfect teeth, perfect hair
And I wished that I was flippin' like a fighter pilot
Way above the world somewhere
Frog on a lilypad, pocket full of river sand
Heart like a bucket full of dewdrops
You can see the rocks in the water
And the water trippin' over the rocks
Easy breeze, easy chair
And I wished that I was driftin' in a riverboat
Captain of the river somewhere
Singer on a jukebox, mouth full of pop rocks
Mama's belly up on the barstool
She said you can be anybody that you wanna
Don't you let 'em turn you into a fool
I believe, I declare
And I wished that I was a singer in a jukebox
Lightin' up a diner somewhere

Memories of Flying
04:23
|
|||
Don't the days pass by like years and years pass by like moving trains
Don't the pictures we remember turn to stories in our brains
I could pick up all the pieces and arrange them in a line
But I don't know what to do with all these memories of mine
On the weekends I get blurry and I give myself away
I never used to talk this much without a thing to say
I never used to feel like getting lost and breaking down
While I'm down here my mind's a thousand feet up off the ground
I have memories of flying much brighter than a dream
Where the curve of earth itself spreads out in gray and blue and green
If I concentrate I see it from the corner of my eye
I have memories of flying, I've forgotten how to fly
You can tell me that I'm cray 'cause I do it all the time
I know I've traded better angels for my whiskey, beer, and wine
I don't know if I'm staying or if I'm only passing through
I don't know what I remember or what I've been told is true
I have memories of flying embedded in my brain
I wonder where I've been before and whom I might contain
I'm tired of tomorrow but it hasn't happened yet
I have memories of flying I'm unable to forget
I have memories of flying through the rubble and the rust
If a man cannot believe himself whom can he truly trust
I could see the tops of all the trees and brush them with my hand
I have memories I forgot for lack of knowing how to land
I have memories of flying, I tell it to you true
When I'm bymyself they call to me like voices from the moon
And they ring across the neighborhood, the mountains and the sea
I have memories of flying you can't take away from me
I have memories of flying you can't take away from me

Something You Can Sell
04:38
|
|||
I got heartbreak by the bundle, I got pity by the pound
I got heartbreak by the bundle, I got pity by the pound
I got pity by the pound, step right up and come on down
Everybody's talkin' 'bout what I got for sale
My daddy was a brakeman, my mama was a train
My daddy was a brakeman, my mama was a train
My mama was a train, through wind and weather, shine or rain
Mountain or plateau or plain, over hill and dale
It's just as well, it's just as well
Don't are if it's poison if there's water in the well
It's just as well, it's just as well
You can't buy love but it's something you can sell
I've been climbing over fences and sleeping in my shoes
I've been climbing over fences and sleeping in my shoes
When I'm sleeping in my shoes, give me something I can use
Bent and empty, broke and bruised, honey, can't you tell
It's just as well, it's just as well
Don't are if it's poison if there's water in the well
It's just as well, it's just as well
You can't buy love but it's something you can sell
It's just as well, it's just as well
Don't are if it's poison if there's water in the well
It's just as well, it's just as well
You can't buy love but it's something you can sell
You can't buy love but it's something you can sell
You can't buy love but it's something you can sell
You can't buy love but it's something you can sell

Sadie Says
04:53
|
|||
Sadie says she's out of gasoline
She has daisy chains tied around her sleeve
She always stays up late, waiting on a sign
But the days escape when she shuts her eyes
She says, "I don't wanna wait for the light to change
It's four in the morning and I'm feeling strange
It rained all night and the streets are wet
And the ticking of my heart is sticking in my breath
I don't wanna waste another minute
Wanna leave right now, wanna get back in it"
Sadie laughs and covers up her teeth
She has shaky hands and rubber in her knees
She ties a lazy braid and fixes up her hair
And writes her maiden name in the morning air
She says, "I don't wanna wait for the light to change
It's four in the morning and I'm feeling strange
It rained all night and the streets are wet
And the ticking of my heart is sticking in my breath
I don't wanna waste another minute
Wanna go right now, wanna go and get it"
Sadie says as long as she is young
She's only gonna pray with candy on her tongue

The Hospital in Jackson
05:43
|
|||
The hospital in Jackson has an angel painted on the western side
When I close my eyes I see a far horizon etched into my mind
The sun goes down behind me and it's brightest right before it starts to die
Then it rises up in front of me and breathes across my body like a sigh
From Cheyenne to Buffalo, the mountains hangin' heavy in the mist
With every inhalation I can feel the past and future in my chest
December was the quickest way I knew to throw myself onto the pyre
September is an ember at the bottom of a California fire
The air up in the mountains is clean but it's also rarefied
The hospital in Jackson has an angel painted on the western side
My head's a glass of wine and my spine's as fragile as the stem
There's a universe of stars and I am part of every single one of them
I sat down with a cigarette and tried to put your letter to a song
It said love can invent you if you let it represent you for too long
It said love can overcome you if you allow that love to run you underground
And when it's taken from you you're a driving wheel fallen out of round
The roads that cross Wyoming are redder than a spiderweb of veins
There's a park in Alameda where I spent a lonely night between the trains
The hospital in Jackson has an angel painted on the western side
I am bound that way tomorrow, babe, along the straightest path that I can find
Because my memory is sharper than a breath but also harder than a bone
When I got to Salt Lake City, man, I slept against a cemetery stone
I spent a month in Reno with a girl who didn't know my given name
All along I stayed a part of you like sparks are living particles of flame
The hospital in Jackson has an angel painted on the western side
What good are good intentions if you're living with a cancer in your mind
What good is California if you're not allowed to leave your past behind
The hospital in Jackson has an angel painted on the western side
The hospital in Jackson has an angel painted on the western side
