about
"The Monarch" is the title track of an album John Walker released in 2007. In the liner notes, he wrote of this song, "The sun comes up in the morning, goes down in the evening, and the monarch butterfly flies from Mexico to Canada every spring. Amazing. It is a fact worth remembering when the blues get so low down you wonder if there is anybody or anything at all in this world you can trust."
lyrics
Saturday night, two bottles of wine
Drifting along on Tulsa time
It was all you could do
It was what you could do
In that little room, to sing your part
Of the South Street Blues
The monarch, baby, is on the wing
Flying from Mexico, that's one thing you can trust
You can trust
Every new spring, you've got to believe it
You know you must
You get your candles, there are 10 of them
Put them up in the windows when it is closing time
And you're feeling blue
And you're thinking about that that little room
And the South Street Blues
You read your books, took a ton of advice
Took a look inside, paid the price
For the time it took to take that ride far away
To some paradise
Wild birds flutter around the moon
The monarch, baby, comes with his tune
It was all you could do
And it was what you could do
In that little room, to sing your part
Of the South Street Blues
In that little room
To sing your part
Of the South Street Blues
The monarch, baby, is on the wing
