about

John Walker wrote this song in 1978 in eulogy of his friend Mike Barton, who had just passed away at the age of 25. Mike played guitar for Kooter Brown, Jon Emery and the Missouri Valley Boys, the Midwest Ramblers, and many other rock, country, and western swing bands in Lincoln and Austin. He died before I was born, but his music, like John's, still shines on.

lyrics

Like silver spiders dancing
The guitar player's fingers wove magic
And wondrous songs came prancing
On the river eternal, everlasting

When there's no more honky-tonks or cannonballs to ride
No departed loves or haunting delusions
It's time and the river that stands by us all
And the guitar player's music still shines on

And the music played
And time went on
And the music stayed
And we are one

What seems to us to be here and gone
Some say it's just an empty illusion
But it's the one and only thing that goes on and on
You might have heard it in the guitar player's music

So here's to the river and dancing
We are children of the stars o'er the mountain
And on and on through all that's changing
And the guitar player's music still shines on

And the music played
Then time went on
And the music stayed
And we are one
